CAN I BE A FASHION MODEL?

More than just a pretty face.

Do you have the physical characteristics of a fashion model? Here's a quick look at what top modeling agencies are looking for when scouting new talent:

• Age 14-19
• Height, 5'9" or taller.
• Dress, size 0 or 1.
• Face, high cheek bones, interesting eyes, pouty lips (interesting is more important than pretty).
• Long arms and legs.
• Toned body, not too muscular, defined abs.
• Good skin, no blemishes on the face or body.
• Healthy hair

One of the greatest supermodels of all time is 5'7" (Kate Moss), so it's not impossible to make it as a model at a height less than 5'9", but you have to be more amazing the shorter you are. Also, there are other types of models today, not just fashion models. There are catalogue models, lifestyle models, instagram models, influencers, and they come in all sizes and shapes. But fashion models, who walk runways and get hired day in and day out for fashion editorials and campaigns, are usually 5'9" or taller. Age requirements are looser, models with strong brands are working longer. Lauren Hutton was on the cover of Vogue Italia October 2017 at age 74. Naomi Campbell is still working regularly at age 47, Kate Moss is still working at 44. A lot of the Victoria Secret models are in their upper 20s and even lower 30s (Alessandra Ambrosio just retired after the 2017 VS fashion show at age 36). However, when scouting new talent, agencies are often looking for younger models that can be developed for a long and successful career. The older you are, the more it will be expected that you have an established brand, large social media following and the experience to deliver on set like a professional.

One last thing about the physical. A lot of famous fashion models were bullied in school because they are tall and look like aliens. Please don't let your peers get you down about your appearance, they're idiots. In all likelihood, the weirder you look, the more sought out you'll be for fashion. Your uniqueness is your strength. Embrace the things that make you unique.
